Over and Under the Snow:
This unit combines visual narrative with an exploration in science regarding animal hibernation in the winter. Third graders learn about certain animals that live under the snow during the winter time in the story “Over and Under the Snow.” The sophisticated artwork by Christopher Silas Neal, teaches students how they can show two perspectives, over the snow, and under the snow, in one single composition. Students create a monochromatic value scale of tints in order to establish "shades of snow," other than pure white.
